The secret killer “sugar”

On the road to living a healthier life, the facts about sugar came to light.  I first discovered that everything we put into our mouths from steak to bread turns into sugar.  Our body converts everything we eat into sugar or to be more specific, glucose.  This glucose is used for energy throughout our bodies.
So your probably asking yourself, “How then is a spoonful of sugar different than a spoonful of lets say a salad?”
Healthier foods like vegetables, meats, or fruits also have nutrients in them that are essential for keeping our bodies healthy.  These nutrients include proteins, fats, carbs, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.  Our bodies don’t just need the sugar for energy, they also need the nutrients which are the building materials that help our bodies recycle, and rebuild our hormones and cells on a daily basis.
So to answer the early question,“How then is a spoonful of sugar different than a spoonful of lets say a salad?”when we eat a salad, some of it is converted to glucose (sugar) and used for energy, while the other digested nutrients are sent through our bloodstream to various parts of our body where it is needed and used. Whereas if we were to eat just a spoonful of sugar, it will add nothing but calories to our bodies.

Another interesting thing about sugar, especially table sugar, is that it is built from 50% glucose and 50% fructose. Although fructose is contained in healthy things like fruit, our bodies can’t cope with it quite as good as with glucose. Fructose won’t satiety our hunger and it is only able to be processed in our liver cells.  And if you remember my article about toxins, we want to not overwork our livers by adding toxins and unwanted sugars so that it won’t have time to deal with fat. Scientists have even shown that the overconsumption of fructose can lead to a fatty liver disease.
But even too much glucose can be bad for you. We now know glucose is used for energy, and everyones body has a hormone called Insulin. Insulin is what regulates the glucose in our blood.  But if we are constantly overwhelming our system with glucose it will eventually overload the amount of glucose in our bloodstream which can’t be used or excreted so it is then converted to fat and stored in fat cells. Eventually this overloading of glucose in our blood will lead to diabetes in most people. This could be the reason for the rise in diabetes in our country especially in young people under 20.

We have even seen a large rise in exposing the dangers of sugar in our daily lives. There are now many documentaries out there like:  That Sugar Film (2014); The Secrets of Sugar (2015); The Truth About Sugar (2015)
Many now are changing from saying that saturated fats are the cause of sickness and obesity in people to sugar is truly the evil culprit.  Sugar is also very addictive. When we eat sugar, dopamine is released in the brain, giving us a feeling of pleasure. This can lead to all classic signs of addiction.

So now, that we know the dangers of sugar both fructose and too much glucose, “What are we to do?”

I know for me, I began to omit as much sugar from my diet as I could. It was not an easy thing to do since it is soooo addicting and it seems to be found in everything from sodas, to even breads.  When I did need to use something for some form of sweetening, I chose sugars that were not fructose based or man made. I stopped using table sugar in all forms and started sweetening with stevia and most recently monk fruit. Both are sweeter than sugar and honey so you don’t need a lot. They are both fructose free and do not effect your glucose levels in your bloodstream.
And since everything we eat turns to sugar, I chose to make my body work for the glucose by eating things that were more complex and had more nutrients my body would need to heal and grow.
So I don’t turn this post into a book and the goal of this post was to inform you of the dangers of sugar, I will talk about complex vs simple carbs in my next post.
